Michigan already has one of the worst student-to-counselor ratios in the nation, ranking 48th in the country with an average of one counselor for every 615 students, according to data from the 2020-21 school year.

A growing number of students are seeking funding for college by filling out the FAFSA form this past academic year. While Michigan students have struggled to fill out the form in recent years, participation rates are increasing.

The Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity is edging toward its goal to increase the number of Michigan residents with a post-secondary credential, officials told the Board of Education during a presentation Tuesday.

Howell and Pinckney high schools received grants from the Michigan College Access Network, which awarded $95,438 in grants to 97 high schools and community-based organizations across Michigan to support local college access activities.

Schools and organizations used the grants to support a wide variety of efforts, including FAFSA completion events, career and college exposure trips, incentives for completing college-going steps, and decorations or refreshments for College Decision Day.

The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) announced it has awarded over $95,000 in grant funding to high schools and community organizations across Michigan to support local college access activities.

Big Rapids Virtual School along with nine other schools around Michigan will get an ASPIRE grant of $5,000 each as part of being selected by Michigan College Access Network's High School Innovation Grants program.
